Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical body horror, but inside Together resides a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The plot begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on right now.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
