PSG Overcomes Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening cup on fourteen different times.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the French league winners and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele found the net in the opening stages.

However, Marseille fired two times late to seize a surprise advantage. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial leveler in the final moments to send the match into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping crucial attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to seal a 4-1 shootout win.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
