Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such drugs need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
