A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant questions over operational security.
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
